The University is not one visitor campus
The University of Cambridge and its colleges are connected institutions, but each college manages its own visitor arrangements. A gate that was open on a previous trip may be closed for worship, exams, ceremonies or college business.
Separate exterior architecture from public streets, paid or timed independent admission and access included with a guided tour. They are different experiences.
Current practical answers for three priority colleges
| College | Can tourists visit? | Entrance | Key details | Official source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| King’s College | Yes, on dates marked open. A standard ticket covers the Chapel and visitor grounds, not other College buildings. | Main entrance on King’s Parade, CB2 1ST. The Visitor Centre is opposite. |
| Opening calendar Ticket prices Verified 1 Nov 2026 |
| St John’s College | No routine tourist admission at present. Separate access applies to alumni, Cambridge card holders, residents, prospective students and event or chapel attendees. | Great Gate on St John’s Street when published visitor arrangements allow entry. |
| Visitor information Verified 1 Nov 2026 |
| Queens’ College | Yes during published opening. Groups of six or more must use a Cambridge Green or Blue Badge Guide. | Visitors’ Gate in Queens’ Lane. Use the Porters’ Lodge on Silver Street if the Old Gate is closed or for wheelchair access. |

One confirmed interior is a better anchor than several uncertain gates. Public-street views keep the rest of the walk useful when admission is unavailable.
Open the three college locations before setting out
The route below runs south to north from Queens’ through King’s Parade to St John’s Great Gate. It plans locations rather than promising that every college is open.
A realistic route with one planned interior
- Begin at Queens’ Lane if Queens’ is your confirmed interior. Otherwise view the Mathematical Bridge area from public Silver Street Bridge.
- Follow Silver Street and Trumpington Street north to King’s Parade. Use a booked King’s time here if the Chapel is your chosen interior.
- Continue past Great St Mary’s and Senate House Passage to Trinity Street and St John’s Street.
- Finish at St John’s Great Gate for the public exterior. Do not plan to enter while the official notice says the grounds are closed to tourism.
If admission closes, continue with the public route, the market, a museum or a river viewpoint rather than waiting at the gate.
Tourist visit or prospective-student visit
For a leisure visit
Use public visitor information and ticketing pages. Focus on one interior, the architecture and how the colleges shape the historic centre.
For a prospective student
Visitor admission is not a substitute for an open day, department visit or admissions event. Use the University’s official open-day information.
Accessibility, etiquette and changing conditions
Historic thresholds, cobbles and older buildings can create uneven access. King’s publishes an accessibility guide, Queens’ directs wheelchair visitors through its Porters’ Lodge and St John’s has separate visitor guidance. Contact the relevant college when step-free access, seating, toilets or assistance will determine whether the visit works for you.
These are places of study and worship. Follow signs, keep noise low, avoid blocking entrances and respect restrictions on photography, food and phones.
Use the University visitor overview for wider context, then rely on the named college’s own page for admission.
Choose a guided option by the access it names
The recommended alumni walk offers King’s College and chapel entry only when that option is selected. The specialist King’s tour includes the ticket and a fully guided chapel interior. The small-group university walk includes the Round Church and may enter college grounds when possible, but college entry is not guaranteed.
Compare the formats on the Cambridge university tours page. If you stay independent, place a confirmed ticket into the one-day Cambridge itinerary.
The recommended university tour combines the main sights and student perspective, with King’s admission on the selected option.
